TRIMDON UNITED JUNIORS SEASON 2008/09
23rd November 2008

Match Report (U16s)– Sunday November 23rd

Spraire Lads 3  Trimdon Utd 2

The game began with Trimdon kicking with the stiff breeze.  The game began evenly with both teams having good possession but creating little in the way of clear cut chances.  Spraire Lads took the lead after about 20 minutes following a spell of Trimdon pressure.  The ball broke through the middle of the field for the Spraire Lads centre forward, who outpaced the Trimdon centre back to shoot across Andrew Roche, the Trimdon keeper, into the bottom left hand corner of the goal.

Despite this setback, Trimdon continued to compete well, Luke Sirrell and Josh Willis up front becoming increasingly a handful for the Spraire defence.  On 30 minutes Trimdon equalised following a 30 yard Willis free kick.  Willis hammered the ball into the defensive line only to see his powerful shot deftly diverted just inside the right hand post by Harry Scott.  Five minutes later Trimdon went ahead when Scott found himself in some space on the right and placed a teasing shot into the top right hand corner.

The second half began with Spraire lads playing with the stiffening breeze.  Despite this they made little inroads on the Trimdon defence with keeper Roche commanding at set pieces and inspiring confidence with his alertness, effectively sweeping up any through balls behind the defence.  In fact, Trimdon could have been a further two goals ahead, Josh Willis narrowly missing a good chance after he outpaced the Spraire defence then hitting the crossbar following a neat low cutback from the left wing.  This proved a turning point as Spraire Lads began to use the wind effectively from an increasing number of set pieces, equalising midway through the half with a stylish volley from a right wing corner.  Trimdon, coming under increasing pressure, went behind when a long throw on the left caught the defence napping and the Spraire Lads forward homed in on goal and rifled a low shot in at the near post.  Trimdon could have equalised in the final minute when Luke Sirrell coasted through the centre of the home defence to be one on one with the keeper.  The ball took an unkind bobble at the vital moment allowing the keeper to palm it out to the onrushing Chris Magee at the back post.  Unfortunately the spin on the ball and the narrow angle combined to result in his attempt hitting the post and deflecting to safety.
